Oral Presentation Guidelines

We look forward to your oral presentation at the Beneficial Fire Summit! Please review the information on this page to help you prepare for your presentation.

Please remember that our intent is to highlight beneficial fire, applications of research, and future opportunities. If you have a research or data-heavy presentation, please consider how to limit jargon, simplify slides, and clearly articulate how your results relate to beneficial fire and action on the ground.

Presentation File Upload

  • Due to the short transition times between speakers, presenters are required to upload their presentation slides by 11:00PM the day before their talk.
  • Instructions for uploading our presentation file will be posted here soon.

Presentation Format

  • Presentations should be a Microsoft Office Powerpoint or PDF file. You can use the default slide size (16:9).
  • The meeting space has free standard wifi, which is not suitable for streaming, videos, etc.
  • If you plan on playing a video in your PowerPoint, make sure this file is embedded correctly into the Powerpoint. The most common and recommended format is an MP4 video file (.mp4, .mpv, .mov). Other forms of video players like Quicktime, VLC, etc. will not be available.

Presentation Length

  • Oral presentations for the general sessions will be scheduled in concurrent session blocks on December 8, 9, or 10.
  • Presentations will be grouped by topic in 60-minute or 90-minute blocks.
  • Each presenter will have 15 minutes total for their presentation and questions.
  • Please practice your talk so you do not go over your allotted time.
  • Special session presenters: Please touch base with your session organizer, as some sessions have variations to the above information.

Presenter Support – In the Meeting Room

  • Rooms will have a podium, microphone, laptop, projector, and screen.
  • A moderator will introduce you, facilitate questions, and keep time.
  • Please plan to arrive 5 minutes early to the concurrent session start time, introduce yourself to the moderator, help them with the pronunciation of your name, make sure your presentation is loaded, and become familiar with the space.
  • Speaker introductions will be very short, limited to the presenter’s name, affiliation, and the title of the presentation.
